The Wheel 2026
„The Wheel“ is a contemplation on impermanence and mortality—a spiritual quest reflecting on experiences from a journey of several months through the Himalayas and Southeast Asia. In 2016, while attempting to circle the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet, I found myself in a life-threatening situation that I survived only thanks to my wife’s courageous intervention.

„The Wheel“ was originally self-published in 2020 with English text. A revised edition featuring German text is now being released to coincide with the „wall | paper“ exhibition.

Chance—or, if you will, divine intervention—played a decisive aesthetic role in the work’s creation: a draft of the piece fell into the water during a boat trip. The salvaged inkjet prints, with their ink running and blurring, became a vital part of the work.

During the work’s development in 2017, I displayed test prints in an abandoned house in Playa Santiago, La Gomera, pasting them directly onto the walls. Over the course of nine years, I documented the alterations and comments made by visitors, as well as the impact of the elements on the prints. The work has taken on a life of its own; it no longer belongs to me.

A video featuring a soundtrack by the Munich-based drone band „Mindclaw“ was produced for the exhibition.
